Oaxaca is a beautiful state in southern Mexico, descending to the Pacific coast. It was in this region that thousands of years ago that corn (Zea mays), a basic of so many Mexican meals, was domesticated. Towns in Oaxaca state celebrate the Dia de los Muertos, dedicated to distant ancestors and the recently deceased. Parts of the Dia take place in beautiful, carefully planted and tended graveyards. On the night corresponding to Halloween in the U.S., small towns are given over to an all-night festival, with faces painted into masks and symbolic costumes. Many of the photos you see on this page were taken on the festival night in 2018, in a small town some 30 miles from Oaxaca city. I photographed to capture both the beauty and the intensity of this day dedicated to los Muertos, leaving the town at 4:00 AM, with the music still cascading...
